Robert Smith was brought up in a musical family, with father James Alexander Smith a singer, and mother Rita Mary Smith a pianist, so at a very young age he took not only piano lessons, but also guitar lessons. He attended St. Francis Primary School, later transferring to St. Francis Junior School in Crawley, West Sussex, as his family moved there.
