Cohen studied anthropology and visual studies at Harvard University, and graduated magna cum laude. His senior thesis was inspired by his first filmmaking endeavor – a project for Harvard’s Admissions Office in 1970. After finishing his studies, he traveled to Los Angeles to work for Martin Jurow as a screenwriter, but as the plan failed he found himself unemployed. Several months later he found a job as a reader for agent Mike Medavoy and six months into his tenure at International Famous Agency he discovered an unheralded script in some neglected screenplays.

He decided to write a cover of it, although he was threatened with losing his job, however, Universal bought it for a record price and it became the Academy Award winning movie “The Sting” (1973). That same year 20th Century Fox Television hired him as Head of Current Programming to help out with the first year of “M*A*S*H”, perhaps the most popular series of all time, and so he eventually advanced to the title of Vice President of TV Movies. His net worth was now firmly established.

After meeting record label founder Berry Gordy who was trying to bring his company Motown into the film business, Rob was hired as the Executive Vice President of Motown’s motion picture division. His first idea for a Motown movie about African American Super Models – “Mahogany” – was sold to Paramount and filmed in Chicago and Rome. He also adapted Bill Brashler’s novel “The Bingo Long Travelling All-Stars & Motor Kings” into a movie. Cohen left Motown in 1978 and went to produce and direct TV series and films including “Miami Vice”, “Ironweed”, “The Wiz” etc. He started directing full-time from 1990, and many of his early efforts achieved considerable success, including “Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story”, “Daylight”, “Dragonheart” and “The Rat Pack” which won a Golden Globe award. In 2001 he directed probably his most commercially successful movie – “The Fast and The Furious” – which opened with $40 million at the box office in its first weekend, and starred Paul Walker and Vin Diesel. Cohen and Diesel teamed up again to make “XXX” and the later sequels of “The Fast and The Furious”. Some of his most recent films include “The Boy Next Door” (2015) starring Jennifer Lopez, and “The Hurricane Heist” a movie which he wrote and directed and is set for release in 2018.

Privately, Rob has residencies in Bali, Indonesia and Los Angeles, and is an avid surfer. He has four children from three marriages. His first wife is unknown, and his second was Diane Mitzner to whom he was married for a year in the mid ‘80s. Since March 2006, Cohen has been married to Barbara Cashulin.
