Maya Kasandra Soetoro was born on 15 August 1970, in Jakarta, Indonesia to Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian businessman, and Ann Dunham and is a former high school history teacher, but is best known as the maternal half-sister to former President of the US Barack Obama. Today, she works as a Faculty Specialist and Director of Community Outreach and Global Learning of the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute, located in Hawaii.

Speaking about her education, Maya was initially homeschooled by her mother, and later on attended Jakarta International School, matriculating in 1984. Additionally, she was a student of the private Punahou School, located in Honolulu, and then became a student of Barnard College, Columbia University, from which she received her Bachelor’s degree. After that, she studied for her Master’s degree at New York University, and in 2006 got her Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. She initially worked as a history teacher in Hawaiian schools La Pietra: Hawaii School for Girls and the Education Laboratory School. In 2007, she took two months leave to help her half-brother, Barack Obama in his presidential campaign, and in the following year, she attended the Democratic National Convention, where she spoke about growing up with her brother, and being born and raised in a family of Asian-American ancestry.

As of today, she serves as the Director of Community Outreach and Service Learning at the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace & Conflict Resolution, located in Manoa. The courses that Maya teaches include: the History of Peace Movements, Leadership for Social Change and Peace Education. Additionally, she is the author of the children’s book entitled ‘‘Ladder to the Moon’’, which was dedicated to her daughter and her mother, and which was published in 2011. Currently, she is writing a book regarding peace education, which will be entitled ‘‘Yellowood’’.

Being a part of the faculty staff, Maya is active in researching; the fields that she covers are mostly focused on International and Multicultural Education. Besides that, Soetoro studied the use of narrative, and actively promotes Social Studies, including both history and current events. In her studies, Maya uses several perspectives and, partnering with Kerrie Urosevich, she holds workshops focused on professional development.

Speaking about her private life, since 2003 she has been married to Konrad Ng, who is of Malaysian-Chinese and Canadian ancestry, and is now a citizen of US, and the couple has two daughters. When it comes to her philosophical views, she described them as ‘‘Buddhist’’. Maya speaks three languages, Spanish and Indonesian as well as English.
