Justin attended Simsbury High School, and during his time there joined Red Tide a thrash/jazz metal band that converted to a jazz metal band late in the 1990s; he was one of the songwriters and primary lyricists for the band, which achieved a lot of popularity locally, releasing five demo tapes and two CDs. He went on to study percussion at the University of Connecticut, and the band ended in 2002 when the members showed a lack of interest in continuing.
