Who is Julian Newman?

American basketball player Julian Newman was born in Orlando, Florida USA, on 6 September 2001, making Virgo his zodiac sign. He attracted a lot of attention, both positive and negative in 2012, after many videos showing him playing varsity basketball were uploaded onto YouTube by various users; Julian was attending fifth grade at that time, and while many people praised his skills and referred to him as a child prodigy, others criticized how he was marketed.

Education and early life

Julian was raised alongside his younger sister Jaden in Orlando, by their Puerto Rican mother Vivian Gonzalez who played basketball while attending the University High School, while she then spent four years serving in the US Navy prior to working at the US Postal Service, and their father Jamie Newman, who played basketball at Colonial High School, and is today both head basketball coach and history teacher at Downey Christian School.

Julian was only three when he became interested in basketball, and he was thus coached by his father, who soon let his son play with regular basketball balls, and compete with older boys. Jamie put his son through rigorous training, as Julian performed 200 jump shots, 200 floaters and 100 free throws every day.

The sports website MaxPreps featured Julian in an article on 19 December 2012, while the recruiting website ScoutsFocus made a video about Julian and uploaded it onto their YouTube channel, and which quickly amassed nearly four million views. Various magazines joined in and wrote about Julian, such as “The New York Times” and “Sports Illustrated”, and he made a guest appearance in various talk-shows, including “Good Morning America”, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Steve Harvey”.
