George grew up in Dearborn Heights, alongside his two younger sisters, and was raised as Roman Catholic. After finished high school, George enrolled at the University of Detroit, majoring in Communications, and graduating with his bachelors degree in 1972. Soon after he found his first job as a newscaster on the WCAR-AM, and in the period from 1974 until 1978 he was the news producer and executive news producer at the WJBK-TV in Detroit. Several years later, George was appointed as news director for KMSP-TV in Minneapolis, and also as the news director at KSDK-TV in ST. Louis.
