Who is Sam Esmail?
American movie writer, producer and director Sam Esmail, was born in Hoboken, New Jersey USA, under the zodiac sign of Virgo on 17 September 1977. He’s written 10, produced 13 and directed nine movies and TV series, while he’s probably best known for producing the crime thriller series “Mr. Robot”, which starred Carly Chaikin, Christian Slater and Rami Malek, and follows a hacker and his allies as they’re trying to destroy a corrupt corporation; the series aired from 2015 to 2019 and won 24 of its 109 award nominations.
Education and early life
Sam’s Egyptian immigrant parents raised him alongside his two younger brothers and an older sister in Hoboken; not a lot about Sam’s family is known, because he respects their privacy, while it’s known that his sister’s also involved in the film industry, and that she worked on his series “Mr. Robot” as a post-production co-ordinator.
Sam was five when he and his family moved to South Carolina, prior to settling in Charlotte, North Carolina. He grew up being interested in technology, and was nine when he was gifted his first computer. Sam began learning programming when he was 11, and his family later moved to Sewell, New Jersey; he studied at Washington Township High School, and matriculated in 1995.
Sam continued his education at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science and film in 1998.
Initial career
Upon graduation, Sam began working for an internet start-up company, and after a year founded his own Portal Vision software company. He earned $6 million through venture capital funding, and then moved to Los Angeles, California to study directing at American Film Institute Conservatory, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2004.
Career in the film industry
Sam’s producing debut was the 2002 short action comedy movie “The Lobo Paramilitary Christmas Special”, and he then directed the 2004 romantic mystery movie “Deep Down in Florida”.
He spent the following 10 years working various jobs to financially support himself, prior to succeeding in the film industry. Sam gained recognition when he wrote and directed the 2014 romantic comedy drama “Comet”, which starred Justin Long, Kayla Servi and Emmy Rossum, and follows the six-year relationship of a ‘perfect couple’; the movie was nominated for two awards. Also in 2014, Sam wrote the horror thriller movie “Mockingbird”.
He wrote and directed the 2016 short crime movie “Mr. Robot Virtual Reality Experience”, and then produced two movies in the same year: the documentary “Risk” and the short horror “The Careful Massacre of the Bourgeoisie”.
Between 2018 and 2020, Sam wrote, produced and directed the mystery thriller series “Homecoming”; it starred Stephan James, Bobby Cannavale and Hong Chau, follows the wellness company Geist Group and their program The Homecoming Initiative, and the series won four of its 46 award nominations.
Most recently, in 2022, Sam wrote and produced the popular mystery thriller comedy series “The Resort”, which starred Cristin Milioti, William Jackson Harper and Luis Gerardo Mendez, and follows two people who are ready to do whatever it takes for love.
Other credits
Sam’s received five special thanks, including for the 2009 short documentary films “The Fast and the Furious: Quarter Mile at a Time” and “Making the ‘Fast’ Franchise”, and the 2016 short drama film “The Fare”.
He also has two acting credits: Sam played Man on Bench in the 2016 movie “Mr. Robot Virtual Reality Experience”, and various characters in six episodes of the series “Mr. Robot” between 2015 and 2019.
He’s made a guest appearance in the talk-shows “Made in Hollywood”, “Celebrity Page” and “Close Up with the Hollywood Reporter”, amongst others.

Sam’s won four of his 14 award nominations. He won a 2015 Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Series – Long Form, a 2015 SXSW Film Festival Audience Award for Episodic and a 2016 Writers Guild of America Award for News Series, all for “Mr. Robot”; Sam also won a 2019 International Online Cinema Award for Best Directing for a Drama Series, for “Homecoming”.
He was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards for “Mr. Robot” in 2016, for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
Marriage with Emmy Rossum
Sam met famous American actress, singer and film director Emmanuelle Grey ‘Emmy’ Rossum in 2013, when she was cast to star in his movie “Comet”; the two were together for two years prior to becoming engaged in August 2015, and they married at New York City’s Reform synagogue on 28 May 2017, as Emmy’s Jewish. Emmy gave birth to their daughter Samantha Esmail on 24 May 2021.
Sam’s quite secretive when it comes to speaking about his wife and their marriage, but has revealed that he’s suffering from social anxiety disorder, and that Emmy’s been able to help him cope with it.

Sam was a huge fan of American film writer, producer and director Stanley Kubrick while he was growing up, and has revealed that he held ‘Stanley Kubrick film festivals’ at his home when he was a child.
He enjoys being active on Instagram, and is followed by over 100,000 people on the social media network, while he’s posted more than 150 pictures and videos.
