Although born in Oklahoma City, Dan was raised in Mustang, Oklahoma where he attended Southwest Covenant School. During his schooling, he was an all-state, all-conference kicker, and was selected by The Oklahoman as the first-team all-city punter. An individual state champion golfer too, Bailey graduated as valedictorian of his class. When it came to choosing his college path, Dan first accepted to go to the University of Arkansas on an academic scholarship he would receive, however, when not selected as the starting kicker, and so a part of his scholarship, Bailey decided to leave the school and spend one year out of college. The following year, he enrolled at Oklahoma State University, and during his college career he scored second in the Big 12 Conference in field goal percentage, won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker and the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year award.

Dan’s professional career started in 2011 when the Dallas Cowboys signed him as an unlimited free agent, after the 2011 NFL Draft. By the end of the preseason, he was named the team’s kicker and soon broke the rookie record by converting six field goals in one game, just the third rookie in NFL history to record such a performance, and which earned him an NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award. He subsequently reached the position of third player in the club’s history with career field goals – 77 – and set the franchise record for most field goals over 50 yards in career and a single season. Bailey renewed his contract with the Cowboys for seven more years in 2014, reportedly worth $22.5 million. In October the same year, Dan became the most-accurate kicker in NFL history after making a 48-yard field goal, and moved into the club’s second place with 182 extra career points. The following year, he was selected to his first Pro Bowl. Bailey set yet another team record in October 2016, when he scored three or more field goals for the 23rd time.
