The moment he turned 18, Carlos entered the ring for the first time as a professional, defeating Nick Roscorla in the first round of the Aztec Challenge 1 event, held in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Carlos won his next seven matches, defeating Anthony Zamora, David Lindemeyer, Jarvis Brennaman and Brandon Melendez among others, before suffering his first defeat, against Carlo Prater. In 2007 he joined the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), and won the WEC Welterweight Championship by defeating John Alessio, in just his second fight in the WEC.
