He attended Tazewell High School and during his time there, played for the school’s baseball team. Wagner then joined the 1993 Major League Baseball draft, and was selected in the first round by the Houston Astros – as normal he spent time in minor leagues until he made his major league debut with the Astros the following year. In 1996, he started playing as a relief pitcher, and began to significantly improve his performance. He played his first full season with the team the following year and would start to set records. In 1998, despite suffering a concussion which left him on recovery for several weeks, he returned to the Astros and would help lead them to win the National League Central Division, and he then won the 1999 Relief Man of the Year Award.
