Amanda and her three younger sister grew up in West Seattle; her parents divorced when she was still a child, and her mother remarried to Chris Mellas. She first stepped on Italian ground when she was 15 years old, as part of the family holiday, visiting Rome and Pompeii ruins. She went to Seattle Preparatory School, and after matriculation she enrolled at the University of Washington to study linguistics. Thanks to her good grades, Amanda made it onto the dean`s list, and wanted to go to Italy as an exchange student. She worked several part-time jobs in order to earn enough money for a year in Italy.

She moved in to Via della Pergola 7 on the 20th September 2007, with two Italian women who were in their late twenties, and the late Meredith Kercher. Amanda began dating an Italian, Raffaele Sollecito, who lived just five minutes from her and Meredith`s apartment;Amanda and Raffaele spent the notorious night at his home. However, Amanda and Meredith became friends with one Rudy Guede, who then started spending time with them, but was never asked to join them in their apartment.

Detectives started the investigation by questioning Amanda and her boyfriend; as a result, they became the first to be accused of the murder, and were set for the trial. They pleaded not guilty on all charges, however, Amanda was sentenced to 28 years, while Sollecito to 25 years in prison.

Four years later, Amanda`s luck smiled upon her, as she was exonerated from her alleged crimes, after police found undisputed evidences that Rudy Guede raped and killed Meredith. He was then sentenced to 16 years in prison.

After she was acquitted of all charges, Amanda became a media personality, and featured in numerous documentaries, including “Is Amanda Knox Guilty” (2014), among others.
