Who is Toby Huss?
Tobias ‘Toby’ Huss was born in Marshalltown, Iowa USA, on 9 December 1966 – his zodiac sign is Sagittarius, and he holds American nationality. He’s an actor and writer, with more than 150 acting credits to his name, probably known best for his portrayal of Anthony Lamb in the popular 2021 action thriller movie “Copshop”, written and directed by Joe Carnahan, and which starred Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo and Alexis Louder. It follows a con artist who’s hiding inside a small town’s police station from a hired assassin, and a new police officer who’s trying to protect him; the movie was nominated for a Georgia Film Critics Association Oglethorpe Award for Excellence in Georgia Cinema.

Early life and education
Toby was raised in Marshalltown by his mother who worked as a cosmetics sales representative, and his father who taught chemistry at a local high school; because Toby hasn’t mentioned having any siblings, most of his fans believe him to be an only child.
He became interested in acting while attending high school, was a member of its drama club, and appeared in nearly all the plays performed there during those four years. Toby was 17 when he made his debut film appearance, playing Pat Schliesman in the 1984 short comedy “The Adventures of Roo” – he had no other roles in the following five years, as he wanted to focus on his education.
Upon matriculating in 1985, Toby enrolled at University of Iowa, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in acting in 1989; he then moved to Los Angeles, California, and began working on his way up in the film industry.
Roles in movies
Toby played Clerk in the 1989 comedy “Zadar! Cow from Hell”, while a couple of his following roles were in the 1991 short comedy “The Adventures of Pete & Pete: Revenge of the Petes”, the 1994 action crime thriller “Hand Gun”, and later that year the short comedy “The Adventures of Pete & Pete: The Artie Workout”.
He gained recognition in 1995, when cast to play Kenny in the critically acclaimed biographical crime drama “The Basketball Diaries”, directed by Scott Kalvert, and which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Lorraine Bracco and Marilyn Sokol. It follows a teenager who’s dreaming of becoming a basketball star, but his dream’s now threatened by his drug addiction. A couple of Toby’s notable performances in the remainder of the ‘90s were in the 1996 comedy “Down Periscope”, the comedy “Dear God” and the critically acclaimed romantic comedy drama “Jerry Maguire”, which won 26 awards, including an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Cuba Gooding Jr.).
What marked the 2000s for Toby was perhaps his portrayal of Spook in the 2006 biographical war adventure “Rescue Dawn”, written and directed by Werner Herzog, and which starred Christian Bale, Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies. It follows a US fighter pilot who’s been shot down over Laos, and the movie won one of the seven awards for which it was nominated. Toby appeared in only a couple of movies in the remainder of the 2000s, including the crime comedy “Reno 911! Miami” and the romantic drama “A West Texas Children’s Story” both in 2007, and the 2009 comedy drama “World’s Greatest Dad”.
He portrayed Roy Murphy in the hit 2011 action science fiction thriller “Cowboys & Aliens”, directed by Jon Favreau, and which starred Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde. Set in 1873, the movie follows cowboys and natives as they’re defending Arizona from a spaceship; it won one of the 18 awards for which it was nominated.
Three of Toby’s most recent film roles have been in the 2020 mystery horror drama “The Rental”, the 2021 drama “Birds of Paradise”, and the 2022 animated comedy “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe” (voice role); he’s currently shooting for four upcoming movies, including “Fast Charlie” and “National Anthem”.
Roles in TV series
Toby made his debut TV series appearance in 1992, when cast to play Artie in 14 episodes of the family comedy drama “The Adventures of Pete & Pete”, created by Will McRobb, and which starred Michael C. Maronna, Danny Tamberelli and Judy Grafe. It follows the lives of two red-headed brothers, the series aired from 1992 to 1994 and won one of the five awards for which it was nominated.
The remainder of the ‘90s saw Toby appear in an episode or two of various series, such as the critically acclaimed comedy “Seinfeld”, the comedy “The Army Show” and the romantic comedy “NewsRadio”.
Between 2000 and 2002, he played Jupiter, one of the lead characters in the comedy “Nikki”, created by Bruce Helford, and which also starred Niki Cox and Nick von Esmarch. It follows the couple Nikki and Dwight, and the series was nominated for an Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Award for Multi-Camera Television Series. The following years saw Toby make a guest appearance in many popular series, including the comedy “Bollywood Hero” and the comedy drama “Hung”.
Between 1997 and 2010, he voiced Kahn Souphanousinphone Sr., one of the main characters as well as a couple of others, in the popular animated comedy drama “King of the Hill”, created by Greg Daniels, and which also starred Mike Judge, Kathy Najimy and Pamela Adlon. It follows the lives of a propane salesman and his family, and the series won 15 awards, including two Primetime Emmys, while it was nominated for 56 other awards.
Toby’s also known for his portrayal of the supporting character John Bosworth in all the 40 episodes of the drama “Halt and Catch Fire”, created by Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers, and which starred Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis. It follows the lives of several people who contributed to the technological revolution in the ‘80s; the series aired from 2014 to 2017 and won two of the 17 awards for which it was nominated.
Three of Toby’s most recent roles in TV series have been in six episodes of the 2021 fantasy crime comedy “Batman: The Audio Adventures” (voice role), 29 episodes of the biographical comedy drama “Dickinson” between 2019 and 2021, and the 2022 episode “Glow in the Dark Queen of the Universe” of the biographical mini-series “Angelyne”. He’s currently shooting for the upcoming series “The White House Plumbers” and “Fatal Attraction”.
Other credits
Toby wrote 63 episodes of the comedy talk-show “The Martin Short Show” in 1999 and 2000.
He provided his own original paintings for the 2008 thriller comedy movie “Her Morbid Desires”.
Toby produced the 2019 documentary movie “And With Him Came The West”.
He’s made a guest appearance in a couple of talk-shows, most recently in “This Week in Comedy”, “WTF with Marc Maron” and “Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show”.
Love life and wife
Toby prefers to keep the details of his love life away from the media’s attention, and hasn’t spoken of any women (or men) whom he’s perhaps been with. This is why there are today various rumors circulating the internet, concerning both his sexual orientation and past and present relationships.
Toby has a daughter Charlotte, whom he raised as a single father; it’s believed that he was married to Charlotte’s mother sometime in the ‘90s, although no evidence has been provided to support this, nor has Toby addressed these rumors.
There are also those who believe him to be gay, and this to be the reason why he avoids talking about his love life, but this hasn’t been confirmed either.
As of August 2022, Toby seems to be single, has perhaps been married once, and has a daughter.

Toby’s a huge fan of the late American singer and actor Frank Sinatra, and is great at impersonating him.
He’s not a fan of social media networks, but still has a Twitter account which he launched back in November 2008, while he’s tweeted over 2,000 times.
Toby’s passionate about travelling and has been to more than 30 US states, both for work and pleasure, while he’s also vacationed in many European countries; his dream travel destination’s Vienna, Austria.
He’s a philanthropist, and has donated money to several animal shelters, and charity organizations working with underprivileged children.
Toby has his own favorite actor and actress, the late Marlon Brando and Angelina Jolie, while a couple of his favorite movies are “Apocalypse Now”, the trilogy “The Godfather” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life”.
