Stephanie Caroline March was born on 23 July 1974, in Dallas, Texas, USA, the daughter of John Abe March IV and Laura Len Irwin; has a sister named Charlotte. Her parents later divorced, and her mother remarried Robert Derby.

Of Irish, English and Dutch ancestry, Stephanie attended McCulloch Middle School and got her high school education from Highland Park High School. At the same time, her later “Law & Order” co-star Angie Harmon attended the school, though she was two years ahead.

After high school, Stephanie enrolled at the School of Speech at Northwestern University, where she majored in Theater and Hispanic Studies.

Career Beginnings

While at the university, Stephanie began appearing in stage productions such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, as Helena. After her initial on-stage appearance, she continued in the same way, but then in 1997, she made her on-screen debut in the TV series “Early Edition”.

Two years later, she made her first Broadway appearance, and then in 2000, she portrayed Miss Forsythe in the Primetime Emmy Award-nominated television drama movie “Death of a Salesman”, based on the play by Arthur Miller and directed by Kirk Browning.

Rise to Prominence

In the same year, Stephanie was chosen for the role of her career, joining the main cast of the TV procedural crime-drama series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” as Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot.

In her first stint, she acted as the main cast until 2003, when she left the show following the episode “Loss”. She was proclaimed dead at the end of the episode, but since made several returns to the show until 2018. She returned in the sixth season, and in her first reappearance, it was revealed that she was in the witness protection program. She made several recurring appearances, including in seasons 10, 13 and 19.

Why She Left “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”?

Despite her character being adored by numbers of fans out there and having that special relationship with Detective Olivia Benson, Stephanie decided it was time to move on with her career. She had some fun time on the show, as she said, and loved working with people associated with the “Law & Order” franchise, but she felt that she gave all she could in the character of ADA Alexandra Cabot, and now wanted to focus full-time on other opportunities.

After leaving the show in 2003, she portrayed Nikki in Chris Rock’s written and directed BET Comedy Award-nominated film “Head of State”, in which he also starred alongside Bernie Mac and Lynn Whitfield.

In 2012, she appeared in the comedy-drama film “Why Stop Now?”, with Jesse Eisenberg as the main star, accompanied by Melissa Leo and Tracy Morgan, while in 2013, she was Natalie Crawford in Hillary Brougher’s horror fantasy mystery film “Innocence” about a woman who discovers a dark secret surrounding her elite Manhattan preparatory school, with Sophie Lane Curtis, Kelly Reilly and Graham Phillips in the lead roles.

Two years later, Stephanie was selected for the part of Mayor Carol Blanton in the short-lived but critically-acclaimed horror sci-fi comedy series “Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter”, with Jon Glaser as the main star.

Stephanie March was married to celebrity chef Bobby Flay from 2005 to 2015. According to reports, Stephanie and Flay had a rather rough marriage, which led to an even more turbulent fallout. They separated in March 2015, while the divorce was finalized in July of the same year.

While married, Stephanie appeared in several cooking shows hosted by her then-husband, including “Boy Meets Grill with Bobby Flay” (2003-2007), “Grill It! With Bobby Flay” (2008), and “Brunch at Bobby’s” (2011).

Just a few months after separating from Flay, she was introduced to tech investor Dan Benton, the founder of Andor Capital, by a mutual friend. The couple married in September 2017 at their home in Katonah, New York.
