Education and early life
American aerospace and chemical engineer Charles Alley and his wife Vivian Schmidt raised their daughter Cheryl in Glendale, alongside her two sisters; Charles was also an astronomer and marksman, and died only around a month before he was to become the oldest competitive aerobatic pilot.
Charles accomplished many feats in his life, including jumping trains and climbing Mount Fuji during winter, and all this led Cheryl to become adventurous and falling in love with travelling. She was five when she began shooting at a gun range, but she also raised various wild animals at her family’s farm, which included monkeys and skunks, and she later flew planes.
Cheryl matriculated from Luther Burbank Middle School in 1972 and then enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College, but eventually transferred to California State University at Northridge, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1976.
