Takeo Spikes grew up in Georgia, and went to the Washington County High School in Sandersville, where he played football, and in his senior year was named Georgia Player of the Year. Later, Spikes studied liberal arts at Auburn University and there he was a teammate with future NFL running back Stephen Davis.
The Cincinnati Bengals selected Spikes as the 13th pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, and he started all pre-season and regular season games in his rookie year. He recorded 122 tackles and two sacks, and was appointed as a new team captain in 1999 when Takeo had 103 tackles, three sacks, four fumbles forced, four fumbles recovered, and two interceptions. The following season, Spikes recorded a career-best 128 combined tackles (109 solo), while in 2001 he had a career-high six sacks.
