Coffey grew up in Surfers Paradise.; with both her mother and brother being hairstylists, she developed an interest for a career in this field too. She began as an assistant in a local shop when she was a teenager, at the age of 15 entering a four-year apprenticeship programme, and later moving to London, where she took a three-year training course.

Coffey eventually settled in New Jersey, USA, where she opened her own salon called “Industrie Hair Gurus” in Ridgewood, which she eventually sold in 2011. She also began working at the Warren-Tricomi salon in West Hollywood, and for hair care product company, Joico International, touring several times a year doing hair shows for the company, collaborating with other professionals and training other aspiring hairstylists. In addition, she has served as an editorial stylist and contributing writer for major fashion and beauty publications such as “Seventeen”, “Marie Claire” and “Mademoiselle”. Her involvement in all these projects has significantly added to her net worth.

Coffey’s excellence as a successful business woman, hairstylist and educator has led her to make a career in television as well. In 2007 she appeared in the Bravo reality television series called “Shear Genius”, during its first season. The show portrayed contestants competing against each other in creating the best hair style, and Coffey became known for her outspokenness and direct style with other contestants. She came to the Final 6 of the competition, and although she didn’t win, she became ‘Fan Favorite’ winner, which brought her $10,000, contributed further to her net worth, and earning her a great deal of fame.

Aside from boosting her fame and fortune, the show also led her to other television opportunities. In 2008 she was invited to star in a new reality series on Bravo called “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover”, which she accepted; it portrayed Coffey using her expertise to help failing salons turn around in a week. The show was renamed to “Tabatha Takes Over” prior to its fourth season, and included her dealing with other struggling small businesses aside from salons, and ran for five seasons, until 2013. The show enabled her to reach stardom and earned her a significant income too.

Coffey has also appeared in other popular shows, such as “Make Me a Supermodel”, “The Tyra Banks Show” and “The Biggest Loser”, reinforcing her celebrity status and further improving her fortune. She also served as the host of the 2011 NAHA awards.

Coffey has written a memoir too, called “It’s Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty”, released in 2011, adding further to her net worth.

Speaking about her private life, Coffey is lesbian, and has been in a long-term relationship.
She is involved in philanthropy, being part of the Hackensack University Medical Center, where she has cut wigs for children suffering from cancer, as well as part of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization which hosts head-shaving events around the world to raise money for childhood cancer research.
