Sandy is one of daughters born to Pat and John Mahl; she has a sister Debbie. Sandy grew up in her hometown and after high school matriculation enrolled at Oklahoma State University. During her University years, Sandy met Garth Brooks in a quite odd way. Garth was working as a bouncer in the bar Tumbleweed Ballroom in Stillwater, and Sandy was involved in a fight with another woman in the bar. Brooks was summoned to separate the two women, and after the fight ended he took Sandy home. The two started dating shortly after the incident and their relationship eventually became more serious, and the two eventually married in 1986 – coincidentally, they had actually been born in the same hospital. Garth had always wanted to become a successful musician, and with Sandy’s full support, the two moved to Nashville, so that Garth would get his chance as in the music world.
