During his junior career, Richard posted a 44-7 singles record which helped him rank no. 1 in the world. In 2002 he made his professional debut at the Tennis Masters Series Tournament, the youngest player to ever qualify for the event, and then the youngest player to win a tour-level main draw match. He joined the 2002 French Open, becoming the second youngest player to participate in the tournament, leading him to the ATP top 200.

In 2004, he reached his first ATP Tournament and would later win the mixed doubles trophy at the French Open, partnering Tatiana Golovin. After missing several weeks of the 2005 season, Gasquet returned and won back-to-back Challenger titles. He had a 10 match winning streak, even defeating no. 1 Roger Federer in a Masters Series tournament. He would win his first Grand Slam singles match at Roland Garros, and would then get his first ATP Title, which also led to his Davis Cup debut. In 2006, he had a rough start during the first half of the season but would later win two titles in the year. His improvement started to show and he reached the final of the Masters Series before being defeated by Federer. He then won a third title in the year in Lyon. In 2007, he reached the 2007 Monte Carlo Masters doubles final alongside Julien Benneteau, but they lost against Bob and Mike Bryan. He would then reach his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon, followed by winning his fifth career ATP title in India, and then reached the final of the Tokyo ATP tournament.

In 2008, after a disappointing first half of the season, he changed coaches and decided not to participate in the Beijing Summer Olympics, to prepare for the US Open. The struggles continued in 2009, despite wins over many high profile tennis players. He was then suspended after testing positive for cocaine, however, he was later cleared after it was discovered that the drug entered his system through contamination in a nightclub. He bounced back in 2010, with a win at the 2010 Open de Nice Cote d’Azur, and reached the final of the 2010 Allianz Suisse Open Gstaad. In 2011, he reached 250 wins on the ATP Tour. The following year, he got his seventh ATP Title, and would then win a doubles bronze medal at the Summer Olympics along with Julien Benneteau. In 2013, he won the Qatar Exxon Mobil Open in Doh, and the Open Sud de France Final, and would reach the ATP World Tour Finals. After a bad 2014, he returned in 2015 to reach his third Grand Slam Semifinal at Wimbledon, and won two more ATP Titles in 2016 despite injury struggles. One of his latest endeavors was the Hopman Cup in which he played for France.

For his personal life, there are no rumours of anyone special in his life. It is known that Richard established the Richard Gasquet Foundation which aims to help underprivileged children back to health through sports. He is also a big rugby fan, and has stated that if he didn’t become a tennis player, he would have been a rugby player. He is a close friend of NBA player Tony Parker.
