At her birth, Beatrix was given several titles – Princess of the Netherlands, Princess of Orange-Nassau, Princes of Lippe-Biesterfeld. She is the eldest daughter of Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and her husband Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld; Beatrix has three younger sisters, Irene, Margriet, and Christina.
Once World War II broke out, Beatrix, her mother, and Irene moved to Ottawa, Ontario Canada, and inhabited the Stornoway residence. While in Canada, Juliana gave birth to her third child, and arrangements were made that her daughter is born on Netherlands ground so that her daughter became eligible for succession to the throne. Before her reign began, Beatrix was heavily involved in politics, and then on the 30th April 1980 she became the monarch, following the abdication of her mother, Juliana. She reigned until 2013, for a full 33 years, giving the reign to her eldest son Willem-Alexander. Though she abdicated, Beatrix has preserved the title of princess, and has continued to perform some of the royal duties, plus is on the board of numerous organizations.
During her reign, the Netherlands relinquished several of its colonies, including Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles. However, she did retain several – or acquire new municipalities, such as Sint Eustatius, Curacao, Sint Maarten and Bonaire.
Back in 2009, Beatrix was involved in an attack in the Dutch Royal Family; a car struck a parade in Apeldoorn, but luckily missed the bus with the Queen on it. Unfortunately, several people died and many were injured. The attacker was caught and identified as Karst Tates; he passed away a day after the incident.
Regarding her personal life, Beatrix was married to German aristocrat Prince Claus von Amsberg from 1966 until his death in 2002. The couple had three children – Willem-Alexander, who is now the King of the Netherlands, Johan Friso, who passed away in 2013 after being injured in avalanche accident he was involved in during skiing in Lech, Austria in 2012, and Constantijin.
