Lloyd attended Yale University, majoring in Chinese studies. He originally had the intention of doing social work but later on he would be introduced to cinema, and discovered his real passion. He started watching a lot of theatre productions and would often read Punch magazine. In 1966, he went on hiatus from his studies and spent time serving as a pathfinder for the Peace Corps. After he returned, he produced the film “Rappaccini” and would then try his hand at directing his first feature film, entitled “The Girl Who Returned”. After graduating, he worked for Cannon Films and started collaborating with John G. Avildsen. They made low budget movies such as “Joe” and “Cry Uncle” before Kaufman went on to direct “The Battle of Love’s Return” which attracted positive reviews, and he then worked on “Sugar Cookies” and “Big Gus, What’s the Fuss?” Afterwards, was involved with “Saturday Night Fever” as the executive in charge of locations. In the 1970s, Lloyd would also direct several adult films such as “The Newcomers” and “The Divine Obsession”.

In 1974, Kaufman would found Troma Entertainment and focus on producing independent comedy as well as action films. He worked as a freelancer to pay the bills, which led to his involvement in “Rocky” and “The Final Countdown”. He then wrote, directed, and produced “Stuck on You!”, “Waitress!” and “The First Turn-On!” which proved to be profitable. In 1985 he worked on “The Toxic Avenger”, which would become his most popular film, increasing his net worth significantly and spawning numerous sequels, comic books, merchandise, and much more. After releasing “Troma’s War” which was a box office failure, the popularity of the film studio started to go down, and soon they would downsize to an independent film studio. He then released “Tromeo and Juliet” which was popular with both critics and audiences, but “Terror Firmer” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV” which were not successful at the box office.

The film company continued to struggle financially, though would still continue to produce independent films. In 2008, a stage version of “The Toxic Avenger” was released, and afterwards Lloyd would focus on other film projects, including “The Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie” and “Return to Class of Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 1”.

For his personal life, it is known that Kaufman has been married to Pat Swinney since 1974, and they have three children.
