Lloyd attended Yale University, majoring in Chinese studies. He originally had the intention of doing social work but later on he would be introduced to cinema, and discovered his real passion. He started watching a lot of theatre productions and would often read Punch magazine. In 1966, he went on hiatus from his studies and spent time serving as a pathfinder for the Peace Corps. After he returned, he produced the film “Rappaccini” and would then try his hand at directing his first feature film, entitled “The Girl Who Returned”. After graduating, he worked for Cannon Films and started collaborating with John G. Avildsen. They made low budget movies such as “Joe” and “Cry Uncle” before Kaufman went on to direct “The Battle of Love’s Return” which attracted positive reviews, and he then worked on “Sugar Cookies” and “Big Gus, What’s the Fuss?” Afterwards, was involved with “Saturday Night Fever” as the executive in charge of locations.
