Dodson is of mixed Filipino and African-American descent; initially raised in Albuquerque, John and his family later moved to Edgewood, New Mexico, where he went to Moriarty High School and started participating in sports such as football, track and field, and wrestling, becoming a two-time state wrestling champion during his teenage years. After matriculating from high school in 2003, John enrolled at the University of New Mexico, and it was at this point that Dodson started training in MMA, after he was recruited by Greg Jackson and Chris Luttrell based on his wrestling experience.
