Jennifer is the daughter of Italian parents, Denise and her husband Stefano Capriati. She grew up in New York City, and since she was a young girl, Jennifer had been holding a tennis racket. Her professional career began when she was only 13, but a year before she won the Junior Orange Bowl in 12- and the 14-year categories. In her first year on tour, Jennifer reached finals in two consecutive events, in Boca Raton, United States, where she was defeated by Gabriele Sabatini, and Hitlon Head, United States, where she lost to Martina Navratilova. However, her fisrt victory came the same year in Puerto Rico, United States, where she defeated Zina Garrison in three sets. After that, she won 13 more singles titles, at such events as Toronto, Canada in 1991, Sydney, Australia in 1993, Strasbourg, France in 1999, Charleston, United States in 2001, and New Haven, United States in 2003.
