Although born in the state of New York, Jamie spent his childhood in Florida and attended Evans High School in Orlando. After matriculation, Jamie enrolled at Florida State University, where he started playing football. During his stint, Jamie started every single game for the University and was named to every team in 1985, marking his successful career at Florida State.
Although he was one of the best players at his university, Jamie ended undrafted in the 1986 NFL Draft. Nevertheless, he signed a contract with the Atlanta Falcons; in his rookie season, Jamie played in 14 games – four of which were starts – and recorded a single fumble recovery. He stayed in Atlanta until 1994, and starting in 1989 he became a standard center for the Falcons playing in every single game until the end of his contract.
