However,in 1958 he was one of the founders of the radio station entitled Family Radio, which was aimed at a Christian conservative audience. Over the years the activities of the station expanded – in 1961, Family Radio started the Open Forum program, a weekly program of calls in to the program that was hosted by Camping. Listeners first asked questions about the meaning of certain passages in the Bible, and Camping responded through interpretations, often with reference to other biblical passages. On occasion, questions were raised that related to Christian doctrine in general, ranging from the nature of sin and salvation, to matters pertaining to daily life, such as sexual morality and marriage education. The open forum was also translated into many foreign languages, and was ultimately available worldwide.

In 1988, Camping left the Christian Reformed Church in North America, and began spreading his own interpretations of the Bible on Family Radio. He was excited by his prophecies about the rapture and the sunset, which he thought he had discovered through numerical analysis of the Bible. First, Camping accepted that the rapture would take place on 6th September 1994, but then when the event failed to materialise, he prophesied that Jesus Christ would return on 21st May 2011. Many supporters believed his prophecy and warned the population in cities like New York with posters and stickers before the presumably impending apocalypse, which of course also didn’t happen. However, some of his followers had given up their jobs, cancelled tenancy agreements or even separated from their partners. Many had donated almost all their fortune to this campaign or started on their own costly info campaigns to draw attention to the supposed end. There were also murders, suicides and suicide attempts – Camping had a lot to explain, but failed to do so.

Finally, in the personal life of the preacher, he married Shirley in 1943, and father seven children with her. On 9th June 2011, Camping suffered a stroke and was hospitalized, with his speech affected by the illness. Two years later, he passed away on 15th December 2013 in Alameda, California, survived by Shirley.
