Born to musician, conductor and composer Jack Marshall, Frank spent his childhood years in Van Nuys, California, before his family moved to Newport Beach, where he went to Newport Harbor High School, and during which he was active in music, cross country, drama and track. After matriculation he enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned a degree in Political science. While in college he started playing soccer and was the one of those responsible for creating the first NCAA soccer team.
While in college he met and befriended director Peter Bogdanovich, and the two developed a friendship which transferred to business. In 1968, Peter directed the film “Targers”, and Frank offered himself as a volunteer. Frank assumed various productions roles, but until the ‘70s didn’t return to film, instead spending two years in Aspen and Marina del Rey working as a waiter and playing guitar at local restaurants and bars.
