Wells made his MLB debut in 1987 as part of the Toronto Blue Jays, but had to wait until he was 30 years old to become a full time starter. He played six seasons with the Blue Jays and was part of the 1992 World Series winning team. During spring training in 1993 he was released, and then signed with the Detroit Tigers, becoming one of the top pitchers of the team; in 1995 he made his first All-Star Game appearance.
