Butch Jones grew up in Michigan and went to the Ferris State University, where he played college football from 1987-1989. In the meantime, Butch worked as an intern for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and after his graduation in 1990, he joined the Rutgers University as a graduate assistant. A couple of years later, Jones became an offensive coordinator at Wilkes University, staying there until 1995 when he returned to his alma mater to work as a running backs coach and offensive coordinator from 1995 to 1997.

Butch Jones replaced Brian Kelly as head coach of the University of Cincinnati in December 2009. He didn’t have the best of the seasons in 2010, an overall record of four wins and eight defeats, but the next season, Jones had a 10-3 record, including the Big East title and a Liberty Bowl win over Vanderbilt. In 2012, Butch posted a 9–3 regular season record, and then he declined offers from Purdue and Colorado to sign a deal with the University of Tennessee.
