Culpepper grew up in Tallahassee, where he attended Leon High School, playing for the school’s football team the Leon Lions and establishing impressive results. In 1988 he enrolled in the University of Florida on an athletic scholarship, earning his BA degree in history following his junior year. He eventually came back to Florida obtaining his MA degree and a law degree in 2001.
While at college, Culpepper played for the Florida Gators, the team for which his father once played as center, and his uncle as fullback. During his tenure with the Gators, he established himself as a valuable defensive tackle, being named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in every season. He was also a first-team Academic All-American, earning the Draddy Trophy as college football’s most outstanding student-athlete. As a freshman, Culpepper was a first-team All-SEC and a consensus first-team All-American, serving as the captain on the team’s Southeastern Conference championship team.

Following an impressive college career, Culpepper was selected in the tenth round as the 264th overall pick, by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1992 NFL Draft. After two seasons spent with the Vikings, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1994, remaining with the team for the next six years, which enabled him to achieve a great level of popularity and to earn significant net worth. In 2000 he played for the Chicago Bears, additionally improving his wealth.

During his nine-year career in the NFL as a regular starter for the three teams, Culpepper played in 131 games, started 83, effected 34 quarterback sacks and one safety. Over the course of this career, he established himself as a recognized name, building a sizable fortune.

Since he retired from professional football, Culpepper has been living in Tampa, Florida – a partner in the Culpepper Kurland law firm, serving as a trial lawyer.

Following his retirement, he went on to lose almost 100 pounds, and has since held public speeches in the increasing size of NFL players. In 2013 he became a contestant in the 27th season of the popular CBS competitive reality television series “Survivor”, titled “Survivor: Blood vs. Water”. His wife had previously been on “Survivor” during its 24th season, and this time they entered the show as a couple. Whereas his wife was the show’s runner up, Culpepper finished 15th.

He then appeared in the show’s 34th season in 2017, entitled “Game Changers”, which is currently on air. “Survivor” has served as a great way for the former player to reinforce his popularity established during his NFL days. It has also significantly increased his net worth.

Speaking about his personal life, Culpepper has been married to Monica since 1992, and the couple has three children together. The former player has been no stranger to controversy. Although his participation in “Survivor” has greatly contributed to his popularity, the show has also brought him legal problems. Reportedly, upon his retirement from the NFL, Culpepper claimed several football-caused injuries, which enabled him to gain a significant disability settlement. However, after appearing on “Survivor” where he was seen doing various activities he had claimed he wasn’t able to do due to injuries, the insurance company which payed him a $175,000 settlement, has now sued him for insurance fraud.
