From an early age, Arjen has played soccer and was a part of the Coerver Method, a way to learn playing soccer from videotapes of some of the best players, such as Pele. Soon enough he joined FC Groningen, thanks to his ball control skills and footwork. He played for the FC Groningen’s first team in 1999-2000 season, and managed to score three goals in the league. For the second season, he appeared in 18 games in the league and scored two goals, but was frequently used as a substitute.
